About seventeen and a half thousand people have died of AIDS here in the UK, and there are about eighty-eight thousand people living with AIDS/HIV in the UK today. In the early eighties, the government launched a government health campaign which presented us with images of tombstones, death, and the Grim Reaper. This in fact had a very negative impact on people’s awareness levels about HIV because all they did was install more fear. In fact we’ve had no more government health campaigns in relating to HIV/AIDS since, so the majority of the people leaving here with HIV here in the UK are unaware of it because they haven’t been tested. The majority of people in society generally still use HIV very much as a gay disease or an African disease or a disease that only affects drug users or people with hemophilia. This is completely untrue. The majority of people in the world today who are living with HIV or who have died as a result of AIDS have been heterosexual.
