Now what happens when there's HIV infection sometimes is disastrous. Through all the other things I've mentioned in terms of the effect on the children, the effect on the health of the person involved, the effect on the society, and the functioning of the society. But sometimes the society has another response and that is persecution. People have been killed in various settings simply because they were known to have HIV. Prisoners in American jails have been killed because they were found to have HIV. People in the prison didn't necessarily like them anyway because of racial conflicts or gang conflicts but once the HIV status became known, it was just the straw that broke the camel's back in terms of the unleashing of violence against that individual. Similar things have happened in other parts of the world. People have been stoned to death, fires have been lit around their neck, any numbers of people have lost their job, their livelihood, been thrown out of families, all because of their HIV status. The persecution of HIV positive individuals needs to stop. There's no reason for it, and it's just inhumane.
